Hooverwood is excited to announce that we are now a Music & Memory℠-certified facility! We were chosen as one of only six Jewish nursing homes in the U.S. to receive the funding for this certification, and we’re thrilled to introduce another helpful and healing program to our residents at Hooverwood.
Through the use of personalized music systems, the Music & Memory℠ program focuses on bringing the therapeutic benefits of music to persons with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Music therapy has been known to foster calmer social environment, reduce agitation, and enhance engagement, while ultimately creating a pleasurable experience for residents.
Already, this program has created some new happy memories at Hooverwood. “We have seen some magical moments,” says Kira Shemesh, Director of Activities at Hooverwood. By using a splitter to connect two sets of headphones to one iPod, spouses can enjoy personalized music together, even if they are unable to communicate due to their dementia. “We’ve seen residents singing along with their spouses to music they remember,” adds Kira. “It’s a beautiful thing.”
To sustain this program and make it more widely available to residents, Hooverwood is currently seeking donations of new or used iPods, iTunes gift cards, headphones, and headphone splitters. Contact Kira for more information about getting involved.
